Club tennis has had a busy season! We started off the year strong, with many new faces at practices. In October we hosted a mini-tournament against Washington State and played several matches against them. The weather was lovely and everybody had fun. The rest of fall semester passed by quickly and we continued our bi-weekly practices.
At the spring semester activities fair several more people signed up for club tennis. It is great to see the program growing! In February one of the senior captains organized a tournament just for the Whitman club players. The results from this tournament were used to create a "ladder" and to figure out who would travel to tournaments. In March a community member volunteered his time to help out at one practice a week. We all greatly appreciate the time he has given to our program. In April we held a bake sale at a varsity match to raise money for the upcoming season. We all had a great time baking together, watching the varsity match, and earning money for the club tennis program. The next day we traveled to Eastern Washington University to play in a tournament against several other teams. We used the World Team Tennis Format in which the scores from women's doubles, men's doubles, women's singles, men's singles, and mixed doubles are combined to make a team score. We ended up losing a close match to Washington State and winning against Central Washington. It was a great end to our season!
I have met some amazing people through club tennis. As a first year student, I was worried about the transition from high school to college and especially how I was going to keep playing tennis because it was such a huge part of my life in high school. Through the club tennis team at Whitman I have met many amazing friends and I am looking forward to three more years of laughter, memories, and (most importantly) tennis!
Have a great summer everybody, enjoy the tennis weather, and look for us at the activities fair on Monday, September 1st on the Cordiner side lawn from 10-1.
