We had such a fun year with club tennis!! Many new faces starting playing with us in the fall, and in October we hosted our annual friendly tournament against Washington State. We also held two bake sale fundraisers. We used some of the money that we earned to purchase a tennis ball cart, a definite improvement over the reusable shopping bags that we had been using. We were planning on going to the USTA Tennis on Campus Pacific Northwest Championships in Beaverton, OR. Unfortunately, a week before the tournament a windstorm hit Beaverton and the "bubble" covering over the courts collapsed, causing the tournament to be canceled. We were all bummed out, but continued practicing and playing matches until the end of the semester.
Spring semester started out cold and foggy, but we had a blast with our thrice weekly indoor practices (aka tennis dance parties). The USTA Tennis on Campus Pacific Northwest Championships were rescheduled for March, so we were busy figuring out logistics and practicing for the big tournament. We also enjoyed lots of rounds of "graveyard," and other silly tennis games. Eight players went to the USTA Tennis on Campus Pacific Northwest Championships and our team did extremely well, winning our consolation bracket. Hopefully we will be able to take two teams to this tournament next season! We also traveled to Eastern Washington University and Washington State to play competitive matches. Players of different skill levels participated and we all had a blast. I especially enjoyed the ice cream after the WSU match... We wrapped the season up with several lovely practices under the lights on the outdoor courts.
Over the last season of club tennis I really enjoyed seeing the diversity in skill level. Absolute beginners came to practice, as well as people who have been playing tennis for a long time. Everybody had a blast! It always put a smile on my face to see the joy our club members have for tennis. People are excited to be at practice, travel, and/ or play competitively. Next year we are hoping to travel more, take two teams to the USTA Tennis on Campus Pacific Northwest Championships, and have more social gatherings off the courts.
I hope ya'll are having a delightful summer and we are looking forward to seeing everybody in the Wallas in the fall!
